Freak of Nature

Created in response to a brief requiring a record cover, poster, and modular typeface. My response explores the concept of packaging within packaging through the visual metaphor of an egg carton. Designed for Sleep D’s 'Freak of Nature', the record features eye-catching green eggs and smashed whites that add a “gross-out” edge, echoing the gritty, electro-tinged sound of the album.

In response to a brief to design a record cover, poster, and modular typeface based on a chosen theme, I developed a concept centered on packaging within packaging, using an egg carton as the core visual metaphor. This layered approach draws a parallel between the protective function of both the egg carton and a record sleeve, while also allowing for a deeper commentary on fragility, transformation, and disruption.

I chose Sleep D’s Freak of Nature—an album driven by raw, electro-tinged techno—as the subject. To reflect the intense, unpredictable nature of the music, I constructed and photographed an egg carton stage, experimenting with light, shadow, and composition. I later smashed the eggs to create a more chaotic and visceral image on the back cover, suggesting that once the album is played, the contents—like the music—can no longer be contained.

The use of eye-catching green eggs and the unsettling hue of the smashed whites introduces a “gross-out” factor that aligns with both the genre’s harsh edge and the band’s experimental image.

A custom modular typeface—used as both logo and title typography— anchors the design and supports the clean, industrial aesthetic. The final suite includes record cover, inner sleeve, vinyl design, and posters, forming a cohesive and conceptually rich visual identity.
